The Joust: Rules and Registration

Thank you for your interest in The Joust. Let's get started!

  Download Entry Form >>

To register your plan please send a completed Entry Form to cei@bus.ucf.edu. The Downloadable Entry Form is in MS Word format (.doc). To qualify, at least one member of your team must be a current UCF student.

Eligibility:

1. Plans which received an award in any substantially similar form in a previous UCF Joust Competition may not participate.

2.The competition is open to all full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the University of Central Florida during the academic year 2007-2008.  The management team must consist of at least one UCF student.  Non-students may be members of the management team and participate in planning the venture; however, only UCF students may present the plan in the competition on campus and answer questions from the judges.

3.Teams are encouraged to seek advice and coaching from faculty, CEI staff, CEI advising partners (Venture Lab, Small Business Development Center, etc.), CEO Knights workshops, guest speakers, and other students.  However, all presenting group members must have a key role on the management team.  Non-UCF student members may not participate in the presentations.

Rules:

1. Entries must be the original work of the entrants and may be entered by a single student or multi-student team. The size of a team is not restricted; however, suggested team size is between 2 – 5 people. Each team or individual may submit only one entry so that they may learn from the Competition process in a focused manner.

2. Team representatives are expected to attend all Joust events

3. All submissions of business plans and executive summaries are to be made in Microsoft Word format or PDF format. These documents are to be attached to an email sent to cei@bus.ucf.edu by 11:55 pm on the due date. NO PAPER COPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. All documents must include current contact information: Company Name, Contact Name, Phone Number and Email address.

4. Executive summaries are limited to two nicely formatted, single spaced pages.

5. Business Plans are limited to 20 pages plus a 5 page appendix for financial information. Only teams which have qualified as semi-finalists are invited to submit business plans.

6. The business plan must be for a seed, start-up, or early stage venture and must address the entire business concept. Teams that have already secured arrangements for capital from any source, including loans, grants, or outside investment, must disclose the amounts and sources clearly in their entries. As of March 17, 2007, companies must have less than $250,000 in prior funding and less than $20,000 in revenue generated. Proposed ventures which have received funding or generated revenue in excess of these amounts are not qualified to participate. Please contact the Organizing Committee by emailing cei@bus.ucf.edu with any questions regarding eligibility.

7. All contestants are expected to compete with integrity and shall not knowingly deceive judges or members of the selection committee. All presented material shall be offered as an accurate representation of your knowledge and expectations, and shall not contain false or misleading statements. Contestants who violate this expectation of integrity are subject to disqualification and revocation of awards.

8. The organizers of the Joust reserve the right to disqualify any entry that in its judgment violates the spirit of the competition guidelines.

Event Format:

After entries have been received, 12 teams will be chosen to compete in the Semi-Finals on April 4th. Teams will be divided among four rooms, and each team will be given 15 minutes to present, followed
by 15 minutes for questions from the judges. Four finalists will then
be chosen and announced, and will return to compete in the Finals on
April 11th.
